Psychologists play a crucial role in conducting conditional employment psychological evaluations for candidates applying for law enforcement roles in Texas. The Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) and State law require that a qualified psychologist or psychiatrist conduct these evaluations. These "suitability" evaluations must assure that the candidate being evaluated is "of satisfactory psychological and emotional health to perform the duties, accept the responsibilities and meet the qualifications established by the appointing agency."
